Getting from Venice airport to the city centre starts with a piece of geography: Venice Marco Polo Airport sits at Tessera, on the mainland, about 8 kilometres north of the historic centre. There is no direct rail link to the island: you cross the lagoon by boat or take a bus to Piazzale Roma, where the road simply stops. Choosing between the two comes down almost entirely to one thing: where you are sleeping.

First rule, and the one that catches out anyone who has already bought a pass: ACTV tickets and passes are not valid to the airport. The airport links are a separate service with their own fares.

Boat and bus prices are public scheduled fares; water taxi prices vary with the route, the hour and the number of passengers.

Alilaguna: the three lines and what separates them

Alilaguna is the scheduled public boat service between the airport and the city. A ticket costs €18 one way and €32 return on the airport to Venice route; airport to Murano costs €10 (€18 return). These are the official fares published on www.alilaguna.it.

Choosing, in practice:

  • Staying at Rialto, inner Cannaregio, San Polo or Dorsoduro? Take the Orange line. It enters the city at the Sacca della Misericordia and works up the Grand Canal: the shortest route and the best-looking.
  • Staying at San Marco, Castello, the Giudecca or the Zattere? Take the Blue line. It goes the outside way via Murano and the Lido: slower, but it puts you down on the right side of the city.
  • Heading straight to Murano? Both the Blue and the Red lines call at Murano Colonna, and for that leg you pay €10 rather than €18.

An Alilaguna ticket includes one large bag plus one cabin bag; each extra piece costs €4. Children travel free until their sixth birthday. Alilaguna also sells timed passes at €40 for 24 hours, €60 for 48 hours and €80 for 72 hours: worth it only if you plan to use the Alilaguna network heavily, since it is separate from — and dearer than — the ACTV vaporetto network.

The Tiqets product, Marco Polo Airport: Alilaguna Boat To/From Venice City Center, costs €18, takes about 50 minutes and is rated 4.3/5 from 1,077 reviews. It gives you access to all three lines.

The buses: ATVO and the ACTV line 5 Aerobus

The two companies run the same route, airport to Piazzale Roma, in about 20 minutes and at the same price: €10 one way, €18 return. The differences are small.

  • ATVO Airport Bus Express: non-stop, with a large luggage hold, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. It also serves Venezia Mestre station, useful if you have a train or are sleeping on the mainland.
  • ACTV line 5 Aerobus: same terminus, a few intermediate stops along the way. If you already hold a valid ACTV pass you can pay just the airport supplement, roughly €7 one way and €13 return.

Tiqets sells the two directions as separate products, both at €12, with one 85x45x25 cm bag included and free cancellation up to 24 hours before: Marco Polo Airport: Direct Bus To Venice City Center (4.6/5 from 603 reviews) and Marco Polo Airport: Direct Bus From Venice City Center (4.7/5 from 542 reviews). Departures towards the airport run roughly every 20 minutes.

One thing to watch: the bus leaves you at Piazzale Roma, the boundary between the mainland and pedestrian Venice. From there you walk or take a vaporetto. If your hotel is at San Marco, add €9.50 for the boat and about 35 minutes to the €10 bus fare, and the total closes in on Alilaguna. The page on getting from Piazzale Roma to San Marco compares the options for that last stretch.

Water taxi: when the numbers add up

A water taxi is a private motorboat — not a shared water bus — and it is the only transport that runs the inner canals and ties up at a hotel's water door. From the airport it crosses the lagoon in about 30 minutes.

Tiqets lists three formats:

  • Shared, one way: from €39 per person (4.3/5 from 1,006 reviews, about 30 minutes). You share the boat with other passengers heading to nearby areas; for addresses on the smaller canals you agree a meeting point a short walk from the hotel. The service runs from every Venetian terminal: the airport, the cruise terminal, Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto and Santa Lucia station.
  • Shared return: €66 (4.0/5 from 91 reviews). That saves €12 against two singles, but the ticket is non-refundable.
  • Private, from €180 (4.6/5 from 43 reviews), cancellable up to 24 hours before. This is the door-to-door transfer with no other passengers.

The break-even point is clear: two or three people are better off sharing; at four or more the private boat costs almost the same per head and spares you the intermediate drop-offs. Consorzio Motoscafi Venezia fares for the airport to historic centre run to about €120–160 per boat depending on the destination. Night and luggage supplements are set out on the water taxi page.

Terminal to pier: the 400 metres nobody allows for

The arrivals exit and the boat dock are not in the same building. The walk is about 400 metres, covered, with moving walkways: seven to eight minutes at a normal pace, longer with heavy cases, a pushchair or reduced mobility.

The buses, by contrast, leave from the forecourt directly outside arrivals, a minute away. It is a difference you feel in the rain or with small children.

The Alilaguna, ATVO and ACTV ticket desks are in the arrivals area and at the dock, with machines beside them. At the busiest times, between 10:00 and 14:00, the desk queue can run past ten minutes; having the voucher on your phone skips that step.

Going back: how much time to allow

For the return flight, these are the times to budget on top of security:

  • From Piazzale Roma by bus: 20 minutes' journey, plus 15–20 for the wait and the walk inside the airport.
  • From San Marco on the Alilaguna Blue line: 75 minutes on the water, plus 8 minutes from the dock to the terminal. At a 30-minute frequency, allow two and a half hours before check-in.
  • From a hotel on the inner canals by water taxi: 30–40 minutes in total, but book the boat the evening before.

During acqua alta, the tidal flooding that hits the city in autumn and winter, or in winter fog, the boats can run late. On days like that the bus from Piazzale Roma is the reliable option, even if you slept at San Marco. If you check out in the morning and fly in the evening, left luggage at the station or Piazzale Roma frees up the last day.

How to spend less on the transfer

  • Buy the return. Alilaguna drops from €36 to €32, the bus from €20 to €18, the shared water taxi from €78 to €66.
  • Pick the right line, not the famous one. Going to Rialto on the Blue rather than the Orange line costs you 25 extra minutes for the same fare.
  • If you already hold an ACTV pass, check the Aerobus airport supplement before buying a full ticket.
  • Do not stack transport out of habit. A €10 bus plus a €9.50 vaporetto is €19.50 and about an hour: more than Alilaguna on many routes.
  • Four people with luggage? Do the private water taxi sum before dismissing it: four Alilaguna tickets cost €72, and the boat delivers you to the hotel entrance.

The contributo di accesso (Venice access fee) has nothing to do with your transfer and is not sold by Alilaguna or by any carrier: you pay it only on the council's own portal, and it applies solely to day visitors who are not staying overnight, on the dates in the council's calendar.

In short

Getting from Venice airport to the city centre comes down to two questions: where you are sleeping and how many suitcases you have. Near the station or Piazzale Roma with light luggage: the €10 bus, twenty minutes. Near a landing stage in the centre: Alilaguna at €18, Orange line for Rialto, Blue for San Marco. Family, group or a late arrival: a water taxi, shared from €39 per person or private from €180. In every case, the vaporetto pass remains a separate purchase.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get from Marco Polo Airport to Venice?
From €10 on the bus to Piazzale Roma to around €180 for a private water taxi. The Alilaguna boat is €18 one way and €32 return; a shared water taxi starts at €39 per person.
How long does it take?
The bus takes about 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma. A water taxi reaches San Marco in about 30 minutes. Alilaguna ranges from 45 minutes on the Orange line to 70–75 minutes on the Blue line, which makes many stops.
Is my ACTV ticket or vaporetto pass valid to the airport?
No. ACTV tickets and passes do not cover the airport links. The ACTV line 5 Aerobus has its own €10 ticket, or you can pay a supplement of about €7 on a pass that is already running.
How far is the terminal from the boat pier?
About 400 metres, seven to eight minutes on foot along a covered walkway with moving walkways. Allow a few minutes more with a lot of luggage or reduced mobility.
Alilaguna or the bus?
It depends on where you are sleeping. If your hotel is near an Alilaguna landing stage, the boat puts you at the door. If it is near the station or Piazzale Roma, the bus costs less, takes a third of the time and stops a short walk away.
What time is the last boat and the last bus?
Alilaguna's Blue line covers the widest span, roughly from 5:20 until shortly after midnight. Buses to Piazzale Roma follow the flights until late evening. With a night flight, check the timetable for your exact date.
Can I buy a ticket on the day?
Yes: for both the boat and the bus you can buy at the ticket desks in arrivals or at the machines before boarding. Booking online skips the ticket-desk queue at busy times.
How do I get to Tronchetto and the car parks?
From Piazzale Roma the People Mover reaches Tronchetto in three minutes for €1.50, with an intermediate stop at Marittima for the cruise terminal.
